Letters From A Lost Soul

This song is an intro that begins the whole tale. It begins joyfully but gradually shifts to a feeling of sorrow and underlying dread before transitioning into the first track, “Wings”.

Wings

Wings is the instrumental track on the album and acts as a kind of overture to the whole project, displaying a variety of sounds that will be used and called back upon throughout the album and future releases. It ranges from hope to despair, longing to contentment, and shows where the project is capable of going.

Wings was the second song I wrote for the album following Tailwind and speaks to more of the technical nature of my music. It is an expression of my fascination with polyrhythms and odd meters and gives a perfect summation of the layering I like to do on most of my songs. I considered heavily whether I wanted to add lyrics, but as I was writing it I decided there enough intricate little parts and sections that the music itself told the beginning of this story and that I would let the instruments speak as a sort of overture for the album. It feels like a strong start to the narrative I want to weave.”

Tailwind

Tailwind is the love song on the album. Damian and Hope long to see each other again and sing it out in each other’s absence, always there for each other but constantly out of reach. Hope is like the sun to Damian; his guiding light to find his way home.

“Tailwind is a very stripped-down track. I wanted it to feel like your standard 4 or 5 piece rock band (singer, guitarist, bassist, drums, keys) in contrast to the other tracks on this album which can get up into the 20 individual instrument range. I have been trying to write one more contemporary/pop-like track per album and I believe this encompasses that wish extremely well. It’s upbeat, quick, and it feels like you can dance to it. It is still rhythmically technical but it hides it in the 4/4 time and the drive that pushes the sound forward throughout.”

Hope:

You walk beside me,
No longer within reach.
The weary rays of dawn
Crumble under the touch of your feet,
As they land on untouched soil,
Never to leave a mark.
You walk beside me.

You stand in front of me,
Forever out of reach.
But we will meet again some day
Where all your dreams have taken you away.

Damian:

(Holding out your hand,
Forever watching from above.
Until we meet again,
Pushing ever further past the storm.)

Hope:

Spread my wings,
Carried on the current
Towards where you are.
Your guiding wind,
Strong and warm, it never ceases
To bring me back to where I belong.
Closer to where you are.

Damian:

(Closer to where you are!)

Hope:

Until we meet again,
Soaring ever higher.
I won't back down until the end,
Searching out for you.
Holding out your hand,
Forever watching from above.
Until we meet again,
Reaching out to claim the sun.

Octosun / Wings (Reprised)

Damian is back with his family, but doubt begins to creep into their minds and he falls into a deep anxiety as the world falls into peril. A news cast announces the state of the planet and global food shortages that are affecting the morale and trust of the people. Damian is haunted by a nightmare that brings dark tidings.

Damian seeks escape from this life and to return to the stars. His mental state makes it hard to find the passion he once had and he longs for a chance to break out of this slump he has found himself in.

Damian:

I fell, I fell.
When I had climbed so high,
So high.

Damian and Hope:

Hope, in strife.
I'll learn to face my fears,
In time.

Hope, (Damian), {Nightmare}:

Rays of light, entangling my mind.
(Cast aside your sullied past; your darkest betrayal.)
{In time, I'll face this strife!}
My vision fades.
(Time has cast it's ugly mark on all under this same sun. Reaching out.)
{Walking the path bathed in light!}

Damian and Hope:

Make your way to the surface,
Wrapped in beams of warmth and grace.

Nightmare:

Hope fades with darkest grey!
Sorrow shades the brightest days!

Damian and Hope:

Darkest visions made of clay,
Formed by sand and time.
Leave your suffering behind,
And break yourself from your cage.
The sun is grasping.

Damian:

And to cross the sun;
The fire a passion
Lit upon a pyre,
Never to decend.

Soaring above
In a flurry of motion.
Hidden away
From the coldness of the earth.
